Retrofit Guidelines for R-11 to R-23

Typically, R-11 is utilized in centrifugal chillers utilized for large building chilled water systems. Conversion to R-23 can be quite expensive and therefore age and condition of the equipment must be studied carefully before conversion is chosen as a solution.

The following is typical to most retrofits:

bulletMotor pull and winding re-insulating. Winding insulation typically is not compatible with the new refrigerant.
bulletDisassembly and replacement of most or all seals, gaskets and o-rings. Most are not compatible.
bulletComplete oil/filter replacement and flushes.
bulletAir purge replacement, including capture tank / re-claimer system.
bulletOther requirements pertaining to each individual installation

As you can imagine, if the equipment is near end of serviceable life, (within 5 to 8 years) or is a constant trouble spot, serious consideration should be given to replacement or upgrade of the existing equipment.
