Furnace is leaking whenever it is raining

Post by FurnaceIssue » Mon Dec 26, 2016 6:11 pm

Our 3 year old furnace is leaking when it is raining. We found out this issue in 2015, because we didn't know the issue until then after it was installed by a licensed contractor in 2013. We did have the same furnace contractor came over and he had a unlicensed roofer together and concluded that the design of the cap was bad. They fail to replace a new cap, because of the unreliable roofer took the$$$ from the contractor but didn't do what he promised. Ended up, I bought a new cap and had the contractor did the replacement. But the problem is unresolved!!! Please note that both the furnace and it's system were brand-new when they were installed in 2013, because we have it relocated inside the garage with a permit. All materials were provided by the contractors. Also, we found that the contractors didn't install a TEE... Please help, and please advise what contractor we will need to hire in order to have the problem fixed. Thanks

Where does the water come from? Does it run down the furnace vent pipe? Does is drip from the roof sheathing? Until you know the exact source of the leak, it's difficult to formulate a repair strategy.

Thank you for the response Feron! Well, from what we can observe inside the garage (because we are too afraid to climb up to the rooftop), it appears the rainwater is coming from the furnace vent pipe.

Most furnace vent pipe is double-walled and that allows for a tight fit where it exits the roof vent cone. But even my furnace vennt flashing will leak a little. I would Google gas vent pipe cone and read some of the questions and answers. Here are a few -

The neck of the flashing cone where it meets the vent pipe. The storm collar is designed to protect this area.
The rain cap if damaged or corroded.
The vertical seam on the vent pipe or the flashing cone – only if corroded or compromised.
